about Nick Benefield

Raised in Southern California, Nick Benefield is a versatile musician with a passion for telling unheard stories through the medium of musical theatre. Graduating from Belmont University, he earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Composition while studying classical and commercial piano, composition, conducting, voice, and organ.

As a composer, Nick Benefield loves to use musical theatre to tell stories about people that don’t always get their stories told. Recently, he had a 30-minute musical, Driving On, performed that tells the story of five queer, POC young adults in LA navigating change, connection, love, personal identity, and acceptance with a riotous score of funk, jazz, and gospel. He has also been working on other projects include a musical about the avant-garde composer Erik Satie.

As a keyboardist, Nick Benefield has had the pleasure to perform with the likes of Cody Fry and Ashley Cooke on Amazon Prime. He won the Classical Performers Competition at Belmont and performed the 2nd movement of Chopin’s 1st Piano Concerto with the Orchestra. Further, he has played pit piano for a number of musicals: No Man’s Land (world premiere), Legally Blonde, All Shook Up, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, and more.

As a music director, Nick Benefield made his regional debut with Street Theatre—music directing 35mm: A Musical Exhibition. He has also music directed several showcases, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, assistant music directed numerous Belmont Musical Theatre productions, and produced musicals at the collegiate level.
